Halfdome Cables and awesome views from Clouds Rest

Monday 9/21/2015 Halfdome backpackers camp to Halfdome to Clouds Rest to Upper Sunrise Lake

The two days with Susie on the weekend had me reenergized. By 6:30am I was already on the way. I left most my stuff near the trail junction, it felt great to walk with a super light pack.

There were only a handful of people going up at that time, it was not crowded at all. For the cables I tried a few of the gloves in the stash, but I found that the bike gloves which I uses for hiking had the best grip. I really enjoyed the cable section, it's quite a unique experience.

Up on top I chatted a little with Rachel and Ryan who were just finishing up their JMT hike. They had a great trip and got lucky with the smoke because while they were hiking through LeConte Valley we had this unusual wind from the East.

I noticed a guy talking on the phone, apparently the reception up here was at least as good as in the valley below and I was able to send a picture to family.
By the time I was below the cable section the day hiker traffic really picked up. I was happy that I was early.
Next I went to Clouds Rest. At about 10000ft elevation it towers above all the peaks around it. The top is a rather narrow and prominent ridge, which makes for the most awesome views.

Half Dome gets the top marks for the cable experience, but for views Clouds Rest is the winner.
I ended my hike for today at the Upper Sunrise Lake and was happy for some rest.

The Halfdome and Clouds Rest sections were reasonably busy with hikes both from the valley as well as Tioga Road, because both are within day hike distance.
